OCTOBER 12, 2022 — THE MODEL
A Steam creator transformed the famous cat into a low-poly Garry’s Mod model named ‘dingus.’ The creator later confirmed that this Workshop upload was the first appearance of the model on the internet.

OCTOBER 21, 2022 — MAXWELL THE CARRYABLE CAT
ScottRim transformed the model into a carryable Garry’s Mod companion. Players could explore maps while holding Maxwell. The addon spread across the Steam Workshop, and the name Maxwell became permanent.

On November 4, @blastycats posted the spinning Maxwell GIF. One day later, @hacer_kun used it in the ‘You have acquired CAT’ meme. Maxwell escaped the original game and began spreading through X, Tumblr, YouTube and gaming communities.
